History
In early 2020 the Kerkhoff Carnaby Group (KCG) voted on pursuing the idea of a large Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo sculpture in the town of Moora. Reasons behind the idea include:
- To increase tourism potential to Moora and stimulate local economy;
- To put Moora on the ‘Australian Big Things’ map, and reap the economic and social rewards;
- To highlight Moora as an important place for Carnaby’s conservation in WA;
- To enable tourists to learn about the Carnabys and WA’s natural assets
Design:
- KCG voted on a realistic 3D design of a Carnaby >5m. KCG then approached Natureworks, https://natureworks.com.au/ a company from Queensland to produce a design proposal. (Natureworks have 40+yrs in producing thousands of realistic moulded animals/birds including large dinosaurs, dugong, koala, bears etc plus Luna Park entrance in Sydney)
- Final design – 10.7m high sculpture of 2 Carnaby’s – male and female on a perch
- Material – fiberglass mould, structural steel internal frames, concrete footings, paint (gelcoat resin surface will be pre-pigmented with polyester pigments)
